What is BIMI?

BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) is an emerging email standard that allows organizations to display their brand logo next to emails in supported email clients. By associating a verified logo with your authenticated emails, BIMI helps enhance brand visibility, builds recipient trust, and improves email engagement rates.

Why is BIMI Important?

  • Strengthens Brand Recognition: By displaying your logo prominently in email inboxes, BIMI reinforces your brand identity every time you send an email.
  • Builds Trust with Recipients: BIMI complements DMARC authentication, ensuring that only verified emails display your brand logo, reducing the risk of spoofing.
  • Improves Email Engagement: Emails that display a recognized and trusted brand logo are more likely to be opened and acted upon.
  • Demonstrates Commitment to Security: By requiring DMARC compliance, BIMI encourages organizations to adopt stricter email security practices.

How Does BIMI Work?

  1. DMARC Authentication: BIMI requires your domain to have a DMARC policy set to "quarantine" or "reject" to ensure that only authenticated emails are eligible to display your logo.
  2. SVG Logo and Verification: Organizations provide a scalable vector graphic (SVG) version of their brand logo, which is referenced in a BIMI DNS TXT record.
  3. VMC Certification (Optional): Some email clients (e.g., Gmail) require a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC), issued by a certification authority, to authenticate the logo further.
  4. Email Display: Once the BIMI record is validated and email authentication is successful, supported email clients display the logo in the inbox.

Common BIMI Issues

  • Improper DMARC Policy: BIMI requires a strict DMARC policy (quarantine or reject). A none policy is insufficient.
  • Incorrect DNS Configuration: Errors in the BIMI DNS TXT record, such as incorrect syntax or missing fields, can prevent validation.
  • Unsupported or Invalid Logo Format: The logo must be in SVG Tiny Portable/Secure (SVG P/S) format and meet size and color requirements.
  • Missing or Invalid VMC: For platforms requiring a VMC, an incomplete or expired certificate can block logo display.
  • Intermediate Authentication Failures: Issues with SPF, DKIM, or DMARC alignment can result in ineligible emails, even if BIMI is configured correctly.

Best Practices for BIMI

  • Ensure DMARC Compliance: Implement a DMARC policy set to quarantine or reject with aligned SPF and DKIM records.
  • Validate Your Logo Format: Use an SVG Tiny P/S format logo that meets all BIMI specifications.
  • Secure a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC): Obtain a VMC from a trusted certification authority if required by your preferred email clients.
  • Test Your BIMI Setup: Regularly use our BIMI validator to ensure your DNS TXT record and logo are configured correctly.
  • Monitor Email Authentication: Continuously check DMARC reports to identify issues that could affect your BIMI compliance.
